Grooming for Cats
All grooming procedures are best introduced when your kitten is young
so it learns to tolerate being handled. Special attention should be
paid to the ears, feet, and eyes so that you and your veterinarian
can easily examine these areas.
Brushing your cat’s haircoat helps control shedding, decreases hairballs,
and improves skin condition. Your cat can be bathed and some cats even
like it. We recommend HYLYTE SHAMPOO as an excellent shampoo for bathing.
Nails can be trimmed to moderate scratching. We also have a product available
called Soft Paws. These are nail caps that can be placed on the nails to prevent
damage from scratching. Please ask your veterinarian for a demonstration on
applying these nail caps. The caps do have to be replaced about once a month
as they start to fall off.
Ear cleaning can be done on an as needed basis with recommended products and techniques.
Please ask your veterinarian for a demonstration of how to clean your cat’s ears.
Senior cats that have developed a large number of mats that cannot be removed with
brushing can receive a Lion Cut. During a Lion Cut the cat’s hair is shaved leaving
the hair around the face, paws, and the tip of the tail longer. The cat looks and
feels better without the sometimes painful and irritating mats present. If necessary,
we can sedate the cat for this procedure if they are very anxious. Please ask your
veterinarian if a Lion Cut is needed for your cat.
Regular dental care is also an important part of your cat’s grooming regimen. To prevent
bad breath, tartar buildup, tooth infections, and tooth loss we recommend starting
dental care today. Brushing your cat’s teeth daily with special toothpaste, regular oral
exams by your veterinarian, and feeding primarily dry cat food can all help decrease the
amount of tartar on your cat’s teeth and prevent tooth loss. If any problems are noticed
when examining your cat’s teeth your veterinarian may recommend a professional cleaning.
The cleaning can decrease tartar on the teeth and allows a thorough examination of the
cat’s mouth.
