Cat Parasites

Parasites are a common problem with cats. We recommend the following:

Checking a stool sample microscopically (fecal exam) for intestinal parasite eggs at the time of your cat’s annual examination. If your cat has recently received deworming medication, we may recommend rechecking a stool sample again. This is a very important part of your cat’s annual exam as some intestinal parasites can be transmitted to humans.

Your cat’s ears will also be checked closely for ear mites during its exam. Ear mites can be easily treated if found in your cat’s ears by applying Revolution.

Fleas can be seen all year long, especially in late summer and fall. Using Frontline Plus or Revolution once a month can help keep fleas from overwhelming your pet and home. Revolution also prevents ear mites, intestinal parasites, and is a heartworm preventative.

Tapeworms do not always show up on a microscopic examination of your cat’s stool. Monitoring for tapeworm segments on the hairs around the tail is recommended. If your cat has fleas or hunts rodents, we will prescribe a dewormer for tapeworm every 3-4 months.
